Cross Training Questions

Can I perform speed training and endurance training on the same day?

I have my own workout that I am starting tomorrow. What do think of this: Monday: Cross training in the morning Weightlifting in the evening Tuesday: Sprint/Speed Training in the morning Plyometrics following workout Endurance training (Track intervals) Wednesday: Same as Mon. Thursday: Same as Tuesday except Tempo Run instead of track intervals Friday: Same as Mon. Saturday: Same as Tuesday, but no sprint/speed training or plyometrics. Also, long run will performed instead of tempo or track intervals. Sunday: Rest. What do you think of this workout? Should I rearrange some things? This workout is going to be performed over summer. Do you believe it will work? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

  1. This work out seems fine. There is a 100 mile distance runner named Anton Kr..something or other, and he said, "Running is an experiment of one." Advice and counsel are wise to seek, but you make the final call. As for my opinion, this all looks good. Best of luck.
  2. It is best to have recovery or easy days after hard days. If you do plyometrics and sprint work in the morning you are not going to be recovered by the afternoon. You get stronger during recovery.
  3. It all depends on what you want to acheive. There are terms like periodisation which are components of a program aiming at an a event or season of events. Often broken up into 4 week cycles with 3 weeks progressive build-up and the 4th week an easier week. Each of these phases is designed specifically to acheive an improvement in strength, endurance and speed. Following your program may see you make good improvements for 4-6 weeks and then you might stop improving or even get worse. So my advice is to get some advice from a coach, resource and look at the total picture of what you want to acheive.
