Cross Training Questions

cross country want to make varsity?

What are the maximum miles I should be runnning a day? How many long runs in the week should I do? I will do anything to make varsity. I was thinking of joining an adult swim team that meets 3 days a week for an 1hour and 30 minutes, and will be riding my bike around once I buy a new one. I also have a bowflex at my house that I will use for my arms, and was thinking of taking up yoga. What foods can I eat to increase my running performance and keep me in shape? (I want a good diet not for the sake of losing wieght but what will keep me fit for running.) In addition to that stuff anything else I should be doing? Any secret training methods people have?

  1. If you want like CRAZY Stamina run 50 miles a day. LOL. No just run like 1-2 miles of the max miles your going to be runnin in varsity
  2. It may sound stupid but I eat a banana an hour before I run.I find it helps me, but everybody's different. I would find a training scheduale for a highschool or university (better) and follow it. Aquajogging is also as good if not better than swimming. For dieting, pasta and potatoes (not fried) are a good source for carbs. Don't overwork yourself though, becuase you'll have an injury and then the chances of you making varsity are slim.
  3. woah dont go crazy now. if its your first year than you should just work on building your miles. for varsity it would be good to get in 30-45 miles a week. do workouts and hill runs, or long runs too throughout the week. it sounds like your gonna be in good shape. good luck.
  4. Use the foods that work for you. Carbohydrates. Run 35 - 40 miles a week. With one long run. There's no special secret. Just hard work. I'd cut some of the swimming. It's good cardio vascular but, running will make you a better runner.
