Soccer as cross country training?
I'm doing my base mileage now but in July I'll be attending a camp where I will not have time for running. Playing soccer seems to be the only "recreational" activity offered that will get close to running at all, but will missing about 2 weeks of running and playing soccer for about 1.5 hours instead hurt my endurance much? Just wondering. By the way, cross country starts in mid-August so in july I'll already be doing around 25 miles a week and doing one speed session per week.

- did u know that an average soccer player runs 4-5 miles in one game?? no it wont hurt ur training, in fact it will improve u b/c u'll be cross training, running the same amount, and having fun and varying ur workouts good luck
- Soccer will actually improve your endurance for the cross country season, because it is at about the same demanding level physically. The top runners on my cc team all play soccer as their main sport, they just do cc to keep in shape for the soccer season in the spring. So, you will actually be preparing yourself, no worries.
- alright i have a similar problem. but if in soccer your the outside half then you will be runningg a lot more than more than you think you are. my cross country trainer say that as long as im runnning during soccer he is willing to still have me race in cross country. in the city meet i placed second and that was all during soccer season.
- I think it would hurt your training if you are an intense runner. I know my coach would not approve at all. But if you are only doing 25 miles a week, soccer should be equivalent. If you want to be a really good distance runner your average millage per week should be at least 40miles.
