Cross Training Questions

Are running shoes necessary, or are they just one more item to buy?

Are running shoes necessary, or are they just one more item to buy? I'm thinking of trying out for HS sports so I have been running one mile a day, but I hope to get up to three miles by the end of the summer. Currently I'm using New Balance cross trainers? Do I need running shoes? And after how many miles should I replace my shoes.

  1. do you have a coach? am i a psychic? i guess i don't have a realistic answer
  2. I would definitely recommend buying running shoes, and good running shoes also. If you are serious about running and plan on running a lot, it very necessary to have a good pair of running shoes so you don't hurt your feet. Make sure they fit properly too, or else you will get blisters. As far as miles go, I'm not sure of an exact number but I would recommend buying a new pair every year.
  3. You need a good running shoe, for the distances you'll cover
  4. Yes... Save your knees!!!!! Running shoes are the most important training tool a runner can have. Heavier shoes can put stress on your ligaments and joints. Running shoes are designed to take the stress and properly support your feet and legs during running. after a while the spring will be pounded out of your running shoes. even though you will still have more cushion than running barefoot, the stress on your knees can be great enough to cause damage over time. Ideally you should change your shoes every 3 months or 300 miles depending on your training volume. realistically if you can update your shoes twice a year you will probably be alright. But make sure you buy the right shoe for the terrain. I wouldn't recommend using a trail running shoe for a track or road race. best of luck to you.
