Can I get deals on Amtrak for a cross country trip?
I want to travel by train from Massachusetts to Arkansas and then back. I'm traveling alone with 4 kids (ages 1 to 11). Does Amtrak have any options for this as far as fitting all of us into one sleeping compartment? And, most importantly, do they ever have sales or discounts on their fares when you are traveling in more than one zone?

- That is going to be a challenging trip! I think your best option is to CALL Amtrak...I find their website hard to use...and you will be able to get answers to your questions if you call them. You need a customer service rep to help you design this trip. Amtrak is NOT cheap...you may want to do research on plane tickets...if you are lucky, you may be able to fly for same or less money. Good Luck. See site below for Amtrak phone number.
- The trip is possible, but will be difficult, requiring a couple changes of trains. You'll first have to get to Chicago, and then change to the Texas Eagle, which makes about five stops in Arkansas. To learn more about traveling on Amtrak, including the types of compartments, I highly recommend the website www.on-track-on-line.com, which is managed by a group of train enthusiasts. Click on "Amtrak Travel Tips" on the left side for a good overview of how to ride Amtrak.
