Cross Training Questions

What are "cross-training" atheltic shoes really designed for?

I need to replace my old "walking" athletic shoes and would like to get into jogging and running. But, I don't want to buy two pairs of athletic shoes. Are cross-training shoes going to fit the bill?

  1. I would suggest buying a pair of running shoes to do double duty. Since it seems like you're a new runner, your legs are going to need a lot of support because your joints won't be used to the pounding. A cross training shoe will not offer this because they are made to be used for several different activities, not focusing on the specific needs of runners. And running shoes work perfectly for walking too. The needs of runners and walkers are basically the same. Both activities involve mainly forward motion and almost no side to side, therefore they are built basically the same. Running shoes just have more cushioning built in. Go to a specialty running store to get fitted for the running shoes that will give you the most success. They'll cost a little more than they would if you picked up a cheap pair of "running" shoes at a department store, but they don't have trained professionals working there, so you're better off going where the experts work.
  2. NO! if you want to run buy running shoes, go to a specialist running shop and get fitted ito the right type (and I don't mean brand or model). Only wear your running shoes for running in.
