Cross Training Questions

Cross training Judo and BJJ?

So far I have been training Judo for 1 year. The club I go to only has class 3 times a week and I can only make it twice a week. There is no way in hell i'm leaving my Dojo because I love it there I just want to train a lot more, and I love BJJ. I would like an answer from experienced Grappler if it is too soon to start cross training or the sooner the better. Thank You!

  1. I'd say the sooner the better. I do muay thai and ju jitsu and I dont see anything wrong with it. Its better especially if you're thinking about doing MMA. Try it out and see how you like it. :]
  2. I say you should cross train in as much as you can handle. Go check it out. Start trying it. If it works for you keep going. If you find that it is too much or that you changed your mind then stop. You'll know if it is too soon. First step is to give it a try. You'll never know until you try.
  3. Go and train! Your Judo will definitely complement your BJJ. If you have good takedowns, this will give you better positioning and will most likely put you in a more favorable body position like the sidemount or the mount.
  4. I think you will find BJJ an easy transition from Judo. I went down that same road. Now, I would suggest to discuss this with your Judo instructor. He has no reason to object so just tell him respectfully what your plans are. No, it is not too soon to cross-train with two styles that are branches from the same tree. Judo to Ju Jitsu is a natural progression. You can train 7 days a week, twice a day, and it probably won't be too much.
