I'm joining a health club. Can cross trainers and running shoes be used interchangeably?

- If you run, go to a running store and get fitted for a running shoe for your type of foot. You can use the same shoe for cross training, but general consensus is that you should only run in a running shoe. The reason for that is that you put miles on your shoe, which wears your expensive shoe out early. From american running.org "To lengthen the shoe's life, wear them only for running and dry them slowly when they are wet." But I don't think it is reasonable to pull a Mr. Rogers in the middle of a workout, so if you are running and lifting during the same session, wear the same shoe. If you are doing two different session, it is worth (and less expensive in the long run) to have different shoes.
