Cross Training Questions

Are cross-training sneakers good for walking?

I'm taking a power-walking class to fulfill my gym requirement and I wanted to get proper sneakers. Are cross-trainers good for walking... because I don't want to get a pair of sneakers that I can only use for one sport?

  1. Walking shoes are made for the mechanics of walking, which are different than the mechanics of running shoes. Cross-trainer means the shoe is not designed for any particular motion and is mediocre for any sport. The padding along the bottom of the shoe is distributed to make walking comfortable and to prevent injuries. Running shoes, on the other hand, are made primarily for a heavy heel strike, so they have a lot more padding in the heel for that. All that extra padding feels a little weird walking; that's why walking shoes don't have the heavy impact absorption area in the heel. Cross trainers are not designed for either sport. They are just supposed to be comfortable, not assist with any particular movement. Walking shoes should be fine for wearing around.
  2. I would suggest to not use your running sneakers for walking. Because you walk differently from how you run. You don't want to wear down the padding in your shoes. If you go to an athletic shoe store you can see they are labeled: Training Running Walking ect. Good Luck.
