Cross Training Questions

exercise using cross trainer?

Ok i know there are a million questions about this but none cover the same things I needed to know. I am 5ft10 and a size 8 so do not necessarily need to work out to lose weight, but I need to do some exercise to tone up for work (I do modelling!). I have a cross trainer and wanted to know if using this for about 30 mins daily will tone me up without adding muscle. Also - will it effectively tone my arms, legs, bum and stomach, or are there other exercises i need to be doing as well? Motivation is not a problem! xxxx

  1. Don't know what a crosstrainer is but doing the same thing for 30 mins nonstop will not bulk up your muscles. Not sure however if the machine will tone up your body. To tone up your body it is necessary to do different types of actions & motions that involves all your limbs & upper body. That is why participating in sports is the best way to tone up. Do some bench dumbell work to tone up. Get an adjustable (flat & incline) bench & some adjustable dumbells. Do some flat flyes for your chest. Do some inclined flyes again for your chest. Do some 1 arm dumbell rows on the bench for your back. Do some alternate leg step ups using the bench w/ a dumbell in each hand for your legs. Do 18-20 reps of each, then repeat everything all over again 3 times. Do this 3 x a week. Use just enough weights where u struggle by the time u reach your last2 reps, not too heavy. This will not bulk up your muscles. Doing this circuit will tone your tummy as well without doing anything specific for it just like what sports does. The beauty in using dumbells is you work out your arms just by controlling them when you're doing chest & back exercises so need need for a routine for your arms. If u really don't have much body fat, do your crosstrainer only 2 x a week.
  2. Using a cross trainer by itself will help you achieve your goals but to make your workout more effective and fun, try to use your cross trainer as a part of a circuit. An example of what you could do would be 5 minutes mod-high intensity cross trainer work 10 push ups, 5 mins cross trainer, 10 lunges etc. and continue to do this until you reach 30 mins on the cross trainer (6 times). Bench dips, squats, single leg squats, burpees, pull ups, or whatever you like can be included to give you a bit of resistance training which will help tone your muscles. You can do these exercises without weights but if they start to get too easy, increase the resistance.
