Cross Training Questions

Can anyone tell me about Airforce Basic Training?

I am 26 years old and have been a smoker for more years than I can count on my fingers and have not worked out since I took cardio-kickboxing 3 years ago, which I struggled on (it is pretty bad when grandma is still going and you have to stop) I am 5'6 and weigh 125 ponds (I am not over weight, but I am out of shape) I have stopped smoking a week ago(I have not cheated) and I powerwalked 1 mile for 3 days since(boy who new walking fast would give your legs a workout) I now have started jogging 1 mile(2nd day) and it takes me 11min and 33secs (not that great) I am not a runner, even when I ran cross country in high school my best time was 22 min and something for 2 miles. Nov 20th I leave for basic in TX and I am having second thoughts because you have to be able to run a 2 mile in under 20 min. not to mention the push-ups that may kill me too(they are not girl style either) Can someone give me advice on what to expect in basic, maybe some running advice or should I not go..lol?

  1. First off, once you sign the contract you can't not go. Second off, congratulations for signing up and don't let a little bit of poor fitness stand in your way. That seems kind of shallow doesn't it? Besides, if everyone were perfectly fit there'd be no need for basic. Yeah aside from basic teaching you the "basics" of military life, it also kicks your ass with a lot of physical training. Believe me, there will be people in worse shape than you. Want me to go with you? Cause right now I can't even run a mile lol =) Anyway, what you'll learn in basic is progressive gains, which is what you should be working on now. You have almost 3 weeks and if you work your ass off you can see some good improvement. Just don't overdo it. Try to slowly build your way up over the next week and a half to jogging the mile in a little under 10 minutes. Use the next week and a half to add another half mile onto that and see if you can do that in 15 minutes. It'll be hard work but you can do it. I just texted a friend of mine who went through AF Basic and he said your physical training is a lot of running, pushups, sit ups, and abs/chest/arms. Basically the full gammut. They won't kick you out just because you can't do it right away. Once you get there you have 12 weeks to show improvement and that's a long time if you think about it. Right now you're in the starter phase of a workout which is about 3 long where your body is getting the hang of things and getting comfortable. Once you getto basic you'll be looking at the slow progression phase which is 14-20 weeks to hit your goals. But if you think about it, the way they'll have you training, you'll likely reach your goals by week 12 and be where you need to be. Good Luck =) My cousin leaves for the Navy in a few weeks too.
