Cross Training Questions

Not enough training?

Okay so i run every other day with my team and we do good workouts and all, and we go on bike ride, hikes, etc. but i also swim every day, biking to and from practice. I want to be on the varstiy cross coutnry team come this fall but i was wondering if i need to do some more running on the days my team doesn't run?

  1. You may need to figure out some sort of distance tracking system, and build from that in order to best prepare for cross-country. Best advice is to find your pace at the 1 and 2 mile marks, work at that for a week, and then build up to 3, 4, then 5 mile runs. If you live in hilly areas, start out on a track/flat ground first to find that pace, and then work to this more treacherous terrain! It'll help your cardio and muscle strength on many levels.
  2. Clearly you don't need to run for fitness, you've got that well and truly worked out! So do you need to run on those "off" days? How hard do you train with your team? If you think it's not hard enough, drop some of the swimming and start doing extra running training instead. Interval running is excellent at building the stamina you need for cross country.
  3. I say yes. BUT!!! You need to give your body rest too much training can hurt your body and worsen your condition versus helping it. Also make sure to eat heathy the more you take care of your body the better your body takes care of you.
  4. Yes, do all five weekdays. If the team does hard workouts together, then do easy jogs on the other two days (I'm assuming every "other day" is mon, wed, and fri). If the team takes it easy, then push yourself on the other days. Also, my team would use saturdays as slow, long distance days just to cool down from the week and build endurance.
