Cross Training Questions

How did we Ever Survive ???

THE GOOD OLD DAYS My Mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread Mayo on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't get food poisoning. My Mom used to defrost hamburger on the counter AND I used to eat a bite raw sometimes, too. Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper, in a brown paper bag, not in icepack coolers, but I can't remember anybody getting e.coli. Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then. The term cell phone would have conjured up a phone in a jail cell, and a pager was the school PA system. We all took gym, not PE... And risked permanent injury with a pair of high top Ked's (only worn in gym) instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built-in light reflectors. I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened, because they tell us how much safer we are now.... Flunking gym was not an option... Even for stupid kids! I guess PE must be much harder than gym. Speaking of school, we all said prayers and sang the National Anthem, and staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention. We must have had horribly damaged psyches. What an archaic health system we had then. Remember school nurses? Ours wore a hat and everything, and she could even give you an aspirin for a headache or fever. I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself. I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations. Oh yeah..and where was the Benadryl and sterilization kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed! We played 'king of the hill' on piles of gravel left on vacant construction sites, and when we got hurt, Mom pulled out the 48-cent bottle of Mercurochrome (kids liked it better because it didn't sting like iodine did) and then we got our butt spanked! Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10-day dose of a $49 bottle of antibiotics, and then Mom calls the attorney to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat. We didn't act up at the neighbor's house either, because if we did, we got our butt spanked there, and then we got butt spanked again when we got home. I recall Donny Reynolds from next door coming over and doing his tricks on the front stoop, just before he fell off. Little did his Mom know that she could have owned our house? Instead, she picked him up and swatted him for being such a goof. It was a neighborhood run amuck. To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a "dysfunctional family". How could we possibly have known that we needed to get into group therapy and anger management classes? We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac! How did we ever survive?

Public Comments

  1. My thoughts exactly. I miss those days.
  2. it depends on the self defensive system of body. it varies from person to person u might have a good defensive system in your body against different diseases and infection.
  3. So true lol Pregnant women have a whole long list of foods they can't eat whilst pregnant now. I realise alcohol is different but aren't we going a little OTT?
  4. Yeah, sure! But think of all the job openings all the new stuff brought with it! Without them there'd be a lot more unemployment which would cause heaps more crime!! Population numbers have rised steeply, therefore there are a lot more people able to hurt themselves, get sick, and generally complain about their way of life- each complaint creates an office in a government agency to control the offence. Neat & tidy if you ask me!
  5. You got it in one. Our generation survived and lived to tell the tale.I can relate to most of your comments. In my day we played outside and made our own fun.Even managed to go for walks by ourselves without the fear of abduction. Society has changed a lot and not for the better.
  6. This is from a 65 yrs old male. I agree with you completely! The world, as it was known 50 yrs ago, is not the same, and now it's changing so fast, that hardly any children really know the meaning of "caring" for others. Food that we use to eat was not contaminated by stuff from other countries! We weren't worried about diseases, and rarely had any complications, as you say. Now, there is so much "added" to foods that one wonders what is really in them. The family, as we knew it, doesn't exist anymore (or if it does, is rare, and on farms, or country settings). You can thank the ACLU for taking prayer, spanking, and God out of the schools. Worst situations that were ever allowed to happen. This is just too much material to cover in one answer! Have a great day, and just remember, our Congressmen and Representatives aren't doing any good job for us; they only think about themselves! It's a sad day when Seniors can't afford to buy medicine, and the Fed Gov't won't supply it. We think that war is better, spending billions on other countries!
  7. How did we ever survive??? Easy; just surrender within. Take a deep breath , and imagine that there is so much things you you can not do; yet, every thing is fine any way. or See the alternative : Death ! or Dead !! I am sure you will no longer ask the same q and will enjoy your being today.
  8. Those were the days! I live in France now in the country side and it's a lot more like that here, the food is so fresh that they don't have a refrigerated section in the market for eggs. Theres a butcher shop on almost every corner where you can buy the freshest meat, I defrost meat on the counter all the time. And no McDonald's on every corner, the town where I live doesn't have any fast food, we have nothing but sit down restaurants because people enjoy taking time to eat. if we want it fast food we have to drive 30Min's to get it. lol And people actually go outside, couples are always walking together, families do things together, riding bikes, hiking in the woods, kids play outside instead of in front of some game system. People say please and thank you all the time and greet you with a hello even if they don't know you. Every time I go back to the States I can't wait to get back here.
  9. hi there very true .......what about the baby food before there was shops ....theres a thought ??nappies before all the disposables ??the list is endless !!
  10. you familiar with those things so no reation will happen on you but others.
  11. We weren't "antibacterialized'....lol. Oh, those days.......... I will forever miss them! Great post! Thanks.
  12. I totally agree. I watch kids at my house -for my job. When perspective parents come to meet me I lay it out there. I tell them: I spank bad kids, and they sit in the corner when they are bigger. They will eat what I give them or be hungry when you pick them up. They will not carry a bottle of juice all day- they will sit at the table while eating or drinking. They will be taught manners. The crazy thing is the parent seem to like the guidelines. maybe they know that society has run a muck. I feel I run this house old fashioned- but it works.
  13. Thank you. I enjoyed a trip down memory lane. We are definitely in a different world now. We can only hope that this is for the best
