Cross Country Training Knowledge Base
How is this idea for cross country training? I'm a cross country runner, and this is an idea I have for training, tell me what you think of it. Ok, well to start off the focus of my training is to improve my muscular, not cardiovascular, endurance. I have absolutely fantastic cardiovascular endurance, and the only thing preventing me from running faster times is that my muscles just get wasted after a while and I can't keep the pace of my first half. Again, its not cardiovascular, as I can hold my breath, have a conversation, all of it and during a race. And still get great times. So, to improve my musuclar endurance, my idea is to , staring today, do stairs at absolute max, 5, up and down, at a time (its about a hundred steps up). Then do Stassi Squats, and repeat until I am absolutely beyond exhausted. I feel that if I can continue this for a few weeks, perhaps my muscles will be able to keep up with cardiovascular endurance, and I'll be able to run much faster. Any comments, advice, and the like would be appreciated. First person says that'll build cardiovascular, which is true, but won't going up stairs also build muscular endurance? What can I do to as quickly as possible strengthen that?
I need a good cross country training program thing? I did cross country when i was 12, and it was super hard. i was always last and stuff. I am 100 pounds at 5''3 so don't tell me weight is the answer. i am now 13 and i am THINKING about doing it again. practice starts in august and i need some tips on training and getting my body ready. for meets i will run 2 miles and practices are like 3 1/5 miles. thanks!
A late start for cross country summer training program? I just found out today that a cross country training program at my high school has been going on this summer for a month so far. I knew nothing about it. (Maybe because I'm going to be a freshman.) I've tried to run on my own, but all I have been able to reach is a bit over a mile. They are already running 4 miles at the school. There is still one month of training left. Do you think I should try to go to practice (there is one tomorrow)? How much should I try to run if I do go? Last year I was probably the second or third fastest runner on my team. The top runner has left, leaving me as probably the 2nd or 3rd fastest freshman.
I need to know if cross country training is helping me for sprinting? I am primarily a baseball player (outfield), but i have started doing cross country in the fall. I need to know if all this long distance training will help me for doing sprints during tryouts and for games...running down batted balls, stealing bases, running bases etc... if this isnt going to help me for baseball i want to do something in the winter that will help me prepare for baseball.
Can someone give me a good cross country training program?? I am just starting high school in the fall and I want to try out for the varsity cross country team. I need to be able to run a 5k I guess easily by August 13. I try to run at least 3-4 times a week but in the past I have only run a mile at a time. I also live on a 75 acre farm, so I can do hills. If someon could give me a great training program, I would really appreciate it. Please i need a good training program and im just looking for a little help. And jobees, ur answer isn't what im looking for lol. To david, nice answer. I'll try it out. To david, nice answer. I'll try it out.
Does anyone have any suggestions for my cross country training? I'm going to start cross country next school year. Right now I can run 2.5 miles with a few up hills, but that would put me at the bottom and I want to improve. I need to get 2 miles in about 15 minutes and be able to run about 7 miles. I have about 4 months so does anyone have any suggestions?
Tips on cross country training? I've got two months to train for cross country and I've been out for so long, my times are terrible! Can anyone give me good guides or tips on how to really utilize these two months, I want to get the most out of my training.
Is cross country good training for track? I have been running track for two years now, and I am a sprinter/jumper. I was thinking of joining the school's cross country team in order to run when there is no track (fall). Would this be good training for track? Or should I just do my own workouts to prepare (I run winter, spring, and summer track).
Hitting a wall during Cross Country Summer training..? I've been running for about two months for cross country training this summer. When we started running, i continued to break my own personal records, and my times started coming down every time we'd practice. Our dead period was a week ago and it lasted for two weeks, I continued to train duirng this period and now that we are back my times keep getting worse, even though i feel i am in better shape than ever. I cross train on every off day, doing things such a biking or weightlfting. How can i shake this wall? I really need my times to start going back down, tryouts for varsity are soon! I really can't understand why my times are so awful! Any suggestions?
Swimming for cross country training? My coach told me to run 15-30 minutes during the summer for cross country training...but I want to do something besides just running (like swimming). How much would I have to swim to excercise my legs as much as running and what should I do while swimming? I don't have a very large pool and it is oddly shaped so laps would not be very helpful. Thank you.
What are good base training for cross country for a large group? I'm doing my Capstone (it's like a senior project, but not for seniors), and I am planning, and coaching, an off-season workout program for the cross country team. Our team is not very motivated, and it will be a large group. What are some workouts that will help get them in shape, as well as keep them engaged and motivated?
Soccer as cross country training? I'm doing my base mileage now but in July I'll be attending a camp where I will not have time for running. Playing soccer seems to be the only "recreational" activity offered that will get close to running at all, but will missing about 2 weeks of running and playing soccer for about 1.5 hours instead hurt my endurance much? Just wondering. By the way, cross country starts in mid-August so in july I'll already be doing around 25 miles a week and doing one speed session per week.
Summer Cross Country Training Programs? This is high school we are talking here. I know it is just starting track season, but I do not run track. I am just starting to work on summer cross country training regimens. I am thinking that 1 day we have a long run of around 10 miles. Another day of about 5 miles of hills or more with hill repeats. One day off preferably. I am considering 1 or 2 workouts per week- nothing too hard but still not easy. And either 1 or 2 building base days. From your experiences, could you please tell me what you think of this summer regimen? If you would change it, what would you change it to? And also what would some good workouts be for our Division 3 team to get a good workout and still be improving? Thanks for you help and advice. Based on last season- our coach doesn't agree with summer workouts. I can see this as cross country is a somewhat long season and not wanting us to get burnt out. He really wanted the long run at about 6-7 miles. But I am wanting to up all of these because we have a state contending team.
Cross Country Training? I am 14 years old girl and wanted to try out for cross country in the fall. My fastest mile is 15 minutes, and i can only run 1 mile at a time, so i wanted to know if i keep training from now will i be able to do okay at try outs. I know i am really out of shape but do you think this is an unreasonable goal. Also, does anyone have a specifc training tips.
Out Of Season Cross Country Training? I am a corss country runner, which is during the fall. The season had ended, since winter is getting gloser, and the temperature is falling. I hate the cold, so i need to think of some way to stay in shape, without being outside for long periods of time, and I think treadmills are boring. Could i stay in shape if I went on alot of hard bikerides, and worked my calves alot with a stepper? If i did that daily, could !stay in shape for next years season?
Can someone make me a running plan to start training for cross country? I want to start cross country and my friend who runs sad that it would be a good idea for me to make a running plan on how much I will run per day and per week etc. and he even said maybe even changing my eating habits. Can someone make a plan so I can get into shape? I am not in the best of shape so nothing to much. Thanks! =]

Is there a scenic cross country train ride in the US? I live near Boston, and would like to take a cross country train ride to the west coast- What is concidered the most scenic route? I'd get a private room in a sleeper car, etc. I've never traveled accross country by train, and could use advice, thanks. The destination is not the important thing- its the voyage.
How can i get ready for my first cross country high school team, training, stretching, dieting, ect.? This is the first Cross country team that i have ever been on. I have always been good at running long distances, but I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips, lingo, stretching, diets, training, ect. Also is there any way that i can prepare mentally for a meet?
Track and Field Training Vs. Cross Country Training.? I am trying to find something to do (sports) at school. I'm going to 10th grade next year and I want to become involved. I was thinking that over the summer I could begin training myself for cross country and track season next school year. I've never played sports or ran track before. I know I won't be that good, but i want to try anyway. I think I run fast if you take my size into consideration ( I'm like 5'3 and like 130). So i figured if i lost some pounds and worked on my speed and endurance i could do okay. How can I train? Or would it be a bad idea to start something this late? * I really want to try*
I have some questions about cross-country training:? I'm 15 years old, my mile time is around 6 min or less, and I can run 3 miles around the track at 8 min/mile. -How many miles should I run a day to get ready for cross-country? -Where should I train for cross-country (there's no hills around me, mostly streets)? -How many days a week should I take off? -How fast should I be running (min/mile)? Thanks for your help.
Cross-country training? This is going to be my first year of doing cross-country. I want to know what things should I do to train...How many miles a day should I run? There's no hills around me so should I just run on the track? I've been running 3 miles a day. Do I run consecutive miles or rest between?
INdulging Sweets During Cross Country Prep Training? I am currently training for cross country. I run 30 minutes casually in the morning (6 AM), at around 6 PM I have a hard run (tempo, fartlecks, hill repeats, tapering, intervals-depends on the day). Anyway, my dad is trying to keep me off sweets, especially since next year is my junior year of cross country and I've been recieving letters from colleges to run on their cross country team. Is it really reasonable not to indulge in any sweets preparing for cross country. I do not see how damaging it could be to indulge in a few french fries or some ice cream. Yesterday I grabbed for a bite of cake and my dad scolded me!
How do i go from walking to running? Training for Cross Country.? I want to go from walking to running but i got to some problems When i set off in a jog, i can hold it for maybe 2 min's before i have to slow down and catch my breath again. I dont have any pains (legs or anything) just cant keep my endurance up. How can i keep my pace over long distances (3 miles +)?
Training shoes vs Cross country flats in a Cross Country race? Running Junior High Level, 2.5 mile xcountry races. How much of a difference will wearing xcountry flats make over wearing my training sneaks? *I'm a beginner, but I am in the top 8 in my division & have a very real potential to qualify for the JOs in December.

Solo Cross Country Endorsments? I'm a new instructor and I have a question about solo cross country training/endorsments. ok heres the Deal My student has done 3 XC trips with me I signed him off for a Initial XC trip to an airport 60 nm from airport of departure after I had reviewed his flight planning. I had my old instructor review it to be sure i'm not messing up on anything. He says that its not valid because I had not flown the route with him and given instruction on the route to and from the airport and pattern entry. My question is the endorsement for this type of XC says That I have to review and approve his cross country flight plan. Now if I were signing him off for repeted XC that one says Specificly that I have to give Instruction on route of flight 2 and from and pattern entry. Am I right or is my old instrucor correct
Weight training + cross country? I am 17 and am looking forward to my senior year of cross country next fall. I'm trying to find a way to improve my times a bit (in addition to, of course, running about 30-45 miles/week during the summer). Someone suggested to me that I try doing some conditioning other than running like upper body work. I am a bit skeptical because I haven't really heard of cross country runners doing weight training to improve their times. I have heard of sprinters doing it, but not distance runners. Does anyone know if this will help or not? Is it worth the effort, or should I just invest that time in more running? BTW- my PR in the 5k is 17:36 and I am fairly lanky.
cross country training program? i need a training program for the summer to get ready for the highschool crosscountry team. my goal is to run the two miles in 12 to 13 minutes. thanks for the help

What to do to train and get in shape for cross country? I am out of shape. I don't run a whole lot but i do run, and right now I can't run a mile under 10 minutes. I want to do cross country next year because it's my senior year in highschool and I think it would be a fun thing to do before I leave. Does anyone have any suggestions and tips as to what I should do and how I begin getting in shape and training for cross country next year? I have the whole summer to work with! And does what you eat make a big difference?
Cross country/running training? My school has the cross country on Friday 18th May. This year, it's not compulsory, so the only people in it will be really good. I have never run a cross country race before, but I would really like to. How often should I train to be able to run 3km? I play basketball and soccer and I am reasonably fit, just not that fit. Any other tips?
Cross Country training? I've never done Cross Country before, and to be honest, I'm scared shitless. I'm one of the best runners on the track team (freshie), but all I do is the 100 and 200 sprint. And that's all I can ever do. I die at most of my workouts. I can barely jog two laps around the track. Which is... PATHETIC. That's why I want to do Cross Country.. To get in better shape so I can do better at my sprints. A FEW THINGS I'M WORRIED ABOUT... 1.) I just don't have the body for it 2.) I'll loose my "fast-switch" in sprinting How should I train, we start practice in April and I'd like to start training in about 2 weeks when track is over on my own. are these fears real? Is it just a bad idea?
cross country training? I really want to get into running, and maybe join the cross country team, but I have no Idea where to start. Should I start running only a little at first and then gradually increase? Tell the specific amount please. Also, what should I be eating when I'm cross country training? I also have to learn how to run ALOT by August(when tryouts are), so do you think this is a possible goal for me to accomplish? Thanks
cross country training? so i missed a lot of days in track this year because of rain and band so i got out of shape, but i need to get back into shape. i am doing cross country next year and i need help training for it and getting back into shape. does any one have any tips? oh and i am only 14
Cross Country Training? I did track this year and I'm going to try out for cross country next year. (7th going into 8th grade.) I was never the best distance runner to say the least, (always got last. my last time for the half mile was a 3:53 and my mile time was 8:02.) It would really mean alot to my dad though if I made the team, so I need to know how to train for the cross country season. My neighborhood is a half-mile loop with two hills each probably 75-100 meters long, one uphill and the other down. How can train to try to get on the team? I already run a slow jogged mile daily with my dog. I can work hard on this, it means alot to me. Anyone with experience or any idea of how I can do this please? I need to make the team at least, maybe get better than last in my races. Thanks so much for anyone who answers, it's a huge help!
cross country training? My friend wants me to do cross country with her next fall, and I'm considering it. I can run a mile in about 12 minutes, which I know is sort of bad,do you think I could get it down to 6 or 7 over the summer? What kind of raining should I do? I live in a big neighborhood with sidewalks,if that helps. Any tips from XC runners or anyone are greatly appriciated:] oh and also after running awhile i get a pain in my side,is it because my body isnt used to it or something else?thanks:]

Cross Country Training? I am in 8th grade and want to start running XC next Fall and track in the Spring for highschool. I started running about 2 miles on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays before school is this an "ok" way to get in better shape for running next year? The only running I did before starting this was running the mile weekly at my middle school. My best time was about 6:20 for the mile. Should I be able to be in good enough shape to run next year? I heard from somebody that the average time for a 14 year old boy on the mile is 5:55 do you think I can get down to an average time by the end of a school year?
Summer Cross Country training help? Im a Junior in high school and this summer my goal is to run a 5k in low 17s or 16s. I need help with what kind of workouts and strength workouts I can do this summer to reach my goal. Can someone please give me alot of advice or some good websites i can go to. THANKS
Training for cross country? This year my cross country carnival results go towards my Schools Certificate so im training hard like the old days when I came 3rd. Anyway my calves muscles are the problem while running and im not really out of breath. Is this ok or do I have to improve or change my running style. Im known to have a small stride stance but Im extremely fast in sprints so is it my strides or simply because Im going slow at long distance?
Training for Cross Country? I am going to be a sophmore next fall and I want to run cross country. First ear of cross country. There are no cuts for the team but I want to know what my mile time should be and how I can train for cross cuntry. Please be specific.
Training for cross country - new start? Hi, i have been out of action for several years and used to use cross country to improve my fitness for my kickboxing. I am pretty much startign a fresh with this and have planned and ran a .75 mile route which i have run for the past 4 days. I still cannot complete the run entirely most of it is on fairly short hills but with some big hills (2) (this is where i struggle). I have done road running in the past and obviously this is very different but i would like to hear peoples experiences - what should i be doing? running the .75 mile for a week then gradually increase? run slower or what? i do understand as well that eating is a big part of running when i used to train 6 days a week i had to have a high carb inake. This time round i would like to loose a few pounds as well so what is the best foods to eat to aid this which will give me energy too. I also like a routine before i run this used to be a black coffee half hour before i trained? anyone elses routines which help them? Help!
training for cross country? I am not very fast or good at running, but I'm trying to lose weight and I think that trying out for the cross country team will help. I want to know how I should train over the summer so I can be ready. I can run a mile in about 20 minutes
Summer Training Cross-Country? I'm a decent runner. Deffiantly not bad. I just got done with Track season and I actually want to be running low 17's this year. I know I can do it, I just need to make sure i'm in shape by Season. What's the best workout for 6 days a week 1 day rest. And should I lift weights or just run and do body workouts like pushups, situps, pullups, etc.
Is cross country good training for track? I joined my track team because i am pretty fast. My coach thinks I can be a track star. He thinks crosscountry is good training for track. He doesnt make us paricipate in the crosscountry races if we dont want to but he wants us to come to pracctice everyday. I dont have to come to practices during crosscountry season i could just wait until indoor track practice starts but he doesnt aprove of skiping crosscountry season. I do it and i can run 3 miles but i heard long distance training makes you lose speed. Is this true?? What should I do?
cross country? I finished track last week. I need to train hard for cross country season. I am looking to drastically lower my time. Should i start training now?
base training for cross country... what type of workouts should I do??? Track just ended and I have a month before summer cross country camp starts. I ended up with a 6:04 mile and I desperatley want to break 6... but thats a different story. What sort of workouts should I do before cross country camp? Should I mostly just go on long runs to build endurance? btw I'm entering hs next year so hs cross country will be a totally new experience for me. What sort of times do girls get in races? I ran a 5k a few weeks ago and got 22:07... how does that compare with times other highschoolers get? How much can I expect to improve? Thanks! 2-3 miles is too easy... lol in the winter I ran more like 3-6 miles training for the mile, peaking at 6.43.
Training for Cross Country/Track? P90X? My Current Running Schedule: Monday-Friday: 4k Saturday: 5k Sunday: Rest Usually sleeping by 12 during summer, 11 during school. Anyway, the days I run, I wake up at 6:20, have a glass of water and small snack, and give my body half hour to digest it enough. At 7AM I begin my run. Afterwards, I have 2 glasses of water, a 10-15 minute icebath, and then shower. During the day I have about 4 glasses of water and 2 glasses of milk, and right before going to bed, a protein shake. Questions: 1. What should I and shouldn't I be eatting? 2. What Needs to be changed/modified? 3. I am thinking about starting a program called "P90X" in September, I was wondering if A.) It Works? B.) I can do it while running lightly to stay conditioned in the winter? 4. Would increasing my runs by 1km a month be realistic? Swyscheese I am 15 by the way, 16 in January.

Cross Country Vacation by Amtrak's California Zephyr? Has anybody travelled in bedrooms onboard Amtrak trains? We were thinking of taking a cross-country train vacation this summer. The two options are - California Zephyr from Chicago to San Francisco, or Southwest Chief from Chicago to L.A. Which one is more scenic and enjoyable?? Is it safe to do overnight journey on Amtrak trains? (I once took a Greyhound bus and didnt like it much...) Both me and my wife have never travelled in a train, so we are excited to do a trip like this. However price of a bedroom ticket for two for a one-way ride is almost $1500!
Will cross-country adversely affect my weight-training plans? I am trying to build mass and strength for my final basketball season, I have about a month, but I also need cross-country because I have been grossly out of shape. Will the two needs collide negatively? Has anyone been in this predicament? Or am I over-worrying? btw my metabolism is whopping fast, which is why I am worried that running will just burn off all the proteins I take. thanks in advance to anyone who answers
